Sciamma's first feature as writer-director offers a whole new angle on the world of synchronised swimming; or rather, it uses that world to provide insights into the world of teenage girls. Marie, Floriane and Anne fall in and out of love – in one case, with each other – and, as Lisa Nesselson at assures us, 'Be it pretty lasses or their ordinary-looking peers, male viewers can rest assured that this is an accurate take on distaff disarray.' There are no adults in sight, no male perspectives. Just the young women, their rivalries and affections, their progress to adulthood.
